I have recently acquired 8 young crystal red shrimps.

If I may, let me hijack your thread slightly and ask for advice. Currently they are in my 10g breeding tank with a few young adult guppies and some fry. The guppies taste tested them for about a day then figured out they aren't food and have left them completely alone ever since. They seem to be doing ok, and have grown quite a bit since I got them last month. As best as I can tell, I do have both sexes.

I would like to breed these, and maybe someone here can offer some advice.

I am thinking it might be good to move them from the 10g. I have 2 options, move them to a 5g guppy fry tank that has gravel, java moss, and a java fern in it, with a sponge filter. Or I can move them to my new 60g heavily planted tank (photo's of this tank in the general forums).

The 5g offers them a small area to congregate, and the fry I keep in there are newborns so I would hope they won't be able to eat the newborn shrimp.

The 60g offers them lots of room, and places to hide. Also, they would be more protected from swings in water chemistry due to the larger volume. There will be Corys in the 60g along with adult guppies if that matters.

Finally, never having bred these before, how visible are the newborn shrimp to the naked eye? I have tried to read up a bit on these shrimp but have never seen a mention of how visible newborns are. I know they are small due to the small size of the eggs.

BTW wicca, your shrimp look great.

If they are happy and growing where they are...leave them be and move the gupps. Cories will eat shrimp babies. Crystal shrimp can be tricky, but if you have a tank that they are doing good in....don't move them unless you have no other choice. IMO

i agree leave them. the babys will be verry small and hard to see. what kind of filter do u have in thw 10? i would use a sponge to b on the safe side

In the 10g I have sponge filters, as does my 5g and my 60g planted. The 10g is bare bottom, the 5g and 60g have gravel. Decided to toss some photos so you can see what I am referring to. I really want to siphon the bottom of the 10, but afraid I might siphon some baby shrimps, hence my question about how visible they are. I am keeping some of the best looking male guppies with a couple virginal females in the 10g, the rest are in the 60g. I was kinda hoping any shrimp offspring could survive hiding in the 10 but wondering if I am wrong, and like I said makes me afraid to siphon the bottom of the tank. Oh, and the bottom glass was painted black to be non-reflective.

Current home, the 10g:

Possible new home, the 5g fry tank:

BTW thank you for your responses, and allowing me to somewhat hijack this thread.

i would move the gups to the 5 gal and keep shrimp in the 10. they tend to do better in a little bigger tank from what i have been told. if they have had babys they might have been eaten. you would have noticed them berried if you look at them much

I keep crystal reds, dwarf blues, and harlequin. The dwarf blues are neat because depending on my water conditions they go from red to blue, so I always know when they need something!!

wicca, cool shrimp photos in the other thread!!

Gecko, I don't know if you found the same sites I did, but I've read my mind out about breeding CRS and I'm just going to throw a couple of sites I've found:
