Fish Life Span and Egg Viability

I've been watching my Royal Farlowellas for quite a few years now. I have watched them spawn, have seen the fry hatch numerous times over the years. And each time, it's a special thrill to help those tiny wee things make it to fry stage.

Many of the spawns are 80 plus eggs. I know in Nature, that is done as only 1 or 2 will survive to become adults.

Other parts of Nature, I have learned, whether human or animal is on egg viability. When a woman becomes older, her eggs are not as prolific, nor are the eggs as strong as in a young woman. With men, their sperm weakens as they get older.

I see the same in the rest of Nature - older animals slow down and stop producing or if they do produce, not as healthy of offspring.

Since I don't think Nature deviates that much, my theory it is the same for fish. My breeding Royal Farlowellas are 5+ years old now. I have seen the size of the spawns decrease in eggs and I have seen less and less viable eggs this year. Now I know I had water issues here, but I am also thinking, with their life span 5 to 8 years - could this also not be a part of their life cycle?

    Input on this?
