Will black worms live and grow in. The gravel of a tank? Today I was cleaning my badis badis tank and found a large 3" worm type thing in the gravel. The main reason for concern is I found a dead badis in one of the caves that looks like something ate it as the head and body were hollowed out and the balance of the body was intact. If I had to guess the death would have been within 24 hours.
All that's in the tank are badis badis endlers and 1/2 inch baby BN plecs growing out. Its a 55 with a whisper HOB. Hornwart java moss and 15 2 inch pots.
I'll post a pic Monday when I get to work.

Yes, black worms will live and grow in the gravel of your tank.

BUT,.....
I DON'T THINK THEY GET TO BE 3 INCHES.
NOR ARE BLACK WORMS RED. UNLESS YOUR WATER TREATMENT PLANT IS NEXT TO THE NUCLEAR WASTE SITE.

So is it ok to have black worms living in your tank? and breeding?
Offline
I tried to remove it and it wouldn't come off the glass and broke into little pieces like a worm these pieces remained alive and what i was unable to net escaped into the gravel. I have not added any fish to my fishroom in months but feed live Blackworns, frozen Blood worms and frozen Brine on a regular basis.

I'm just hoping somone will tell me this is nothing to be concerned about

Did you figure it out yet? Could it be a tubifex worm that came in with plants? It would take it a while to reach that growth, no? They can be reddish from a pigment hemoglobin.
Someone round here has prolly seen one alive versus fd, dried, or only in the pictures. Maybe they will pop up and say for sure.
GenGen, you are in serious need of plants. Have you ordered some yet or are you still just drooling for some? {{{ducking}}}

MOST LIKELY CAME IN WITH THE BLACK WORMS, I KNOW THERE IS OFTEN FLUKES AND SUCH THAT ARE MIXED IN.
HOWEVER IT DOES LOOK A LOT LIKE AN EARTHWORM AFTER YOUR DROWN THEM TRYING TO CATCH FISH.
IF IT GOT THAT BIG THAN FISH AREN'T GOING TO EAT IT.
I'D GET IT AND ANY PIECES OUT ASAP.
NO SENSE TAKING CHANCES

Ok, are there any answers out there for this worm??
As I just took one out of one of my tanks, that never gets anything live - except snails. The plants get bleached, and have no idea where in the heck this thing came from. Not short either but long about 2-3 inches and it took two capfuls of bleach to kill it tangeled in the net.
To say the least, this is an ugly looking worm, and as have no idea of what in the world it was, as it was alive when red, very leary now of putting hands in that tank, will be wearing gloves for that tank.
I am just hopinh there are no more and that, as do not want the fish killed. Only reason found it was taking everything out and re-doing it, and than when finished, looked at the net and saw this yunky thing - alive. Even one capful of bleach did not kill it, took two. Looks as if plants are going to be getting two bleach jobs and not one anymore.

I have a idea on what to do with it,send it to swampy and can raise some for catfish bait. Thewolfman

Today. I found 4 more during waterchanges they were between the glass and a piece of acrylic I have tacked to the glass with silicone that has clay pots mounted to it. No way to remove them without tearing down the entire setup. Wish I new for sure what they are!?!

I thought I'd look for this, and still not sure I've found it, but check this site out on Aquatic Earthworms:

Maybe? Good luck Bomb, I'm still looking!

Here's another nice website, has lots of pictures of bugs in the water:
http://www.bgsd.k12.wa.us/hml/jr_cam/ma … index.html
Check it out if you collect live foods (daphnia, etc.) to ID the stuff you ALSO get from the ponds. Some aren't so good for baby fish.

Edited to say: not so much info as pictures. But info is out there.

Hmm, I collect aquatic earthworms from the local river to feed my fish. I can defnitely tell you that it's not an aquatic earthworm. It doesn't even appear to be segmented (which means it's probably not an annelid) Aquatic earthworms can't stick to the glass, so I don't know what it is.
Perhaps a huge nematode?

Though they do not appear to be bothering anything nothing will eat it either. Even ignored by discus and angels.

Do any of your fish have any little red sting like things hanging out of their anal area?
I only ask because I found a couple worms that looked alot like those in size color and everything and I learned that they were callamanus worms. Of course my poor fishies had tiny little ones coming out of their anal area.

Hi, Happy to see you back. No, mine did not come from any of the fish, nor do they have them coming out - grin.
That worm was not tiny, but about three inches long, and might have come off some plants I did not do a good job of soaking, either in salt water or bleach water. So now, soaking them longer. Also, have some loaches in there now. They ate the ones in another tank and scared what I had no idea I had out of the water that took to the top of the tank, thus, easy to get and smash, but looked like small leaches to me. Used to pick them up off the floor in PI in the dining room, as came in through the louvers and were nasty. Those I flushed down the toilet.

DANG! Looks like someone got de-wormed in your tank!!!! Kinda reminded me of "Big-Red" chewing gum!!! It looks awfully like a tape-worm but am not positive. I'm going by the segmentation which it appears it has. Were there any other fish in the tank prior (like Discus or Angels?)?
