  • leveling racks and stands

There must have been some good advice on this here, but nothing shows up in the search. If you know a thread on this please direct me to it.

I have a basement that is all tiled and there is a slope from walls towards the center of my fish area (to a drain), which is a problem when I try to place anything that needs to be leveled. I was getting by when I had individual small tanks scattered around but now I want to put two 75g tanks with wood stands next to one wall and a Gladiator metal shelf next to the wall across. I plan to have only two levels of 10g tanks on it (may go down to one level if need be). I know most of you are in favor of making your own racks from wood, but this is more manageable for me if I can get it to work.

I am reluctant to break tiles and redo the cement, at least as the first thing, because 1) it will ruin the basement and 2) I am not handy (hence the premade shelf), and will end up making things worse. I could cut out wood or metal blocks to make up for much of the gap, but it won't be precise. What is your experience with shimming stuff like this? Would a composite shim be strong enough to put under the 75g stand? What about a rack of 10gs (can hold 7 on each level). I can post pictures if it helps. Thanks.

You might try shims if the slope isn't crazy bad, just a thought.

Do you recommend any particular shim material? I read different opinions about different types. Some don't like composites, some don't like wood (organic material, deteriorates) or metal (rust). I am skeptical about the common pine shims as they feel too soft to me.

Most woods will suffice as shims.

Thanks Mark. I was aware of composite shims but these you posted seem to have extraordinary load carrying capacity. Will look into them.
